Membership Information
Membership costs $5.00 per year. If you wish to become a member of the organization please come out to one of our general membership meetings held on the second Wednesday of every month at the Northern Homes for Children’s board Room.

I own a small busines on Main Stree and have seen for years the devestating social cost of unregulated rental housing, absentee landlords and an ever increasing transient population. Having lived on Manyunk Ave since 1990 we’ve counted ourselves lucky to have escaped the problems of lower Manayunk. Well neighbors be advised trouble is migrating to our neighorhood faster than we thought. The new trend is mommy and daddy buy the house for junior who promptly brings in three and four roommates. The once tolerable parking situation has become a nighmare. The noise coming from the party houses is bad and going to be worse when the Phillies win the World Series. In general folks who were one close neighbors are now people living in investment properties with no ties to the community. We need to institute permit parking. We need L & I to enforce code which is only three people per house unrelated by blood. We need to lean on public officials to worry less about re-lection and more about protecting our houses and our neighborhood. I hope this relfects other folks sentinment. I look forward to both discussion and solutions on keeping our neighbor hood from becoming “Spring Break North West.” Remember we pay a lot of taxes and we have a right to live in peace. Our quality of life shouldn;t suffer becasue of the greed of a few landlords.
Dear Neighbors:
It’s been one full year later since my last rant about the problems created by transient renters in our neighborhood. The good news is with the help of the city we were able to dislodge the sororiety operating out of 3742 Manayunk Ave. Faced with having to comply wth L & I violations the owner ousted all eight renters and put the property up for sale. It is unfortunately once again a rental but at least it appears to be within the legal nmuber of tenants.
Two more houses on Manayunk Avenue that used to be owner occupied are now rentals. One of the new rentals was chrsitened by having squatters use the house while the owner was absent. As neighors we were rewarded with the site of one young woman coming home at 4:00 AM dressed only in a blanket She has a bright future ahead as a pole dancer!
If we don’t do soemthing soon, parking will progress from bad to nightmare status. I am completely for permit parking on every block. At least residents can have a shot at parking near their houses. In August we were subjected to a large keg party held at the corner of Manayunk and Rochelle Ave. The drunks decided to play soccer in the middle of the street,and on the lawns of joining and neighboring houses across the street. If the ball smahed a car no biggie. If the player trampled the lawn or hedges no big deal Where are the owers of these properties? Where is the city or the police? There had to have been 30 kids on the front lawn. Oh yea, they had at last two kegs providing plenty of courage from the trough. I’m over it and I’ve got several ideas on how to control what has become an enormous hardship for our neighborhood.
If we have a local committee man I’ve never seen him. I don’t think we have a town watch or even block captains. Like other neighborhoods in the city we need to get organized and to take all legal steps to monitor and protect our neighorhood. Is any one challenging the beer distibuters for selling kegs knowing the beer is going to under age drinkers? I love where we live but with eqch year it becomes harder to make a case for staying..
